Ghana and Green Energy

Ghana is one of the few countries in the world that has initiated strong concepts for energy generation through renewable resources. Being a destination with an abundance of natural resources, the country has carved a niche for itself in the World Economy. Ghana with its rich nature in terms of good climatic conditions, sufficient renewable energy resources and new innovative technologies has started giving preference to Green Energy in recent years. In fact, efforts are being made to increase the use of Green energy in total energy mix produced and used in the country.

In the age of rapid industrialisation, the Government of Ghana has initiated several policies for Energy Sector to meet the current industrial and economical needs. One of the Government’s major program is

An ‘‘Energy Economy’’ which is designed to increase renewable energy production in Ghana and also provide electrification to rural communities by 2020. This is one of the most crucial initiatives in the country in regards with the fast growing economic needs.

This sector is expected to see a substantial rise with respect to usage of renewable resources and the inclination towards green energy of the world at large. Slowly yet steadily countries across the globe are accepting renewable energy resources as a sustainable energy resource, considering the fact that they are more cost efficient and reliable in the longer run. It is probably the most suitable time for nations across the globe to invest and use the renewable energy resources such as wind, hydro and solar as nature provides them at abundance.

Further, steps are being taken to involve private sector for a sustainable and efficient energy production. It is commendable to see such a transition from lacking a proper system to recognizing the potential of green energy in Ghana. The fiscal and other such market barriers on energy generation through renewable resources are reduced or removed so as to encourage sustainable energy. Recent business tie-ups in the Energy Sector have boosted new inventions and use of technologies.

The potential of energy generation through renewable resources is high in the regions across Ghana. The country has 2000 MW of hydropower potential and around 68 favourable sites to construct mini and micro hydro power plants. Also, Solar Energy has the highest potential in northern region.

Increasing the electrification rate in the region could help energy generation through Solar Plants. Ghana’s Energy Sector is known for its highest usage of biomass resources. Thus, there is large scope for energy production through biomass.

Ghana, throughout the years has worked towards developing various policies and strategies nurture the renewable resources for efficient energy generation.
